Cherry Festival

Traverse City isn’t called the “Cherry Capital of the World” for nothing. Summer here means it’s time for the National Cherry Festival—a fun, colorful tradition my family looks forward to every year. The kids love the parades, live music, and watching the air shows. And yes, there are cherry pie eating contests (my crew never passes those up!). Local farmers set up stands filled with fresh cherries, and the whole town smells sweet and delicious. This is what summer in Traverse City is all about.

Nature at its Finest

Traverse City is one of those places that just makes it easy to get outside and soak up the beauty. Traverse City State Park is a great spot for a simple picnic or a weekend of camping under the stars. My boys love the beaches here—Clinch Park and Bryant Park are favorites. There’s plenty of space to build sandcastles, splash around, or just take it slow with a walk along the shore. On sunny afternoons, the water sparkles in a way that makes kayaking or renting a sailboat feel extra special.

And if you’re up for a little adventure, Sleeping Bear Dunes is absolutely worth the short drive. The views of Lake Michigan from the top of the dunes are incredible. We always try to catch the sunset—watching the colors stretch across the sky is a memory that sticks. Hiking, spotting wildlife, and camping nearby make it easy to unplug and enjoy the simple things.

Foodies’ Paradise

Summer in Traverse City is just as delicious as it is beautiful. The food and wine scene shines this time of year, and the best part is—there are plenty of spots where families feel welcome. Local restaurants like Bubba’s Burgers & Bar serve up comfort food in a relaxed setting where kids can be themselves. Red Mesa Grill offers fun Mexican dishes, and The Flying Noodle is a hit with fresh pasta for even the pickiest eaters. The Little Fleet, with its food trucks and open space, is a great stop when everyone wants something different.

And yes, kids are welcome at many of the wineries around Traverse City. Brys Estate has a big lawn and yard games where kids can play while parents enjoy a glass of wine. Dune Bird Winery has a playset, snacks, and lots of outdoor space. Tabone Vineyards is another family-friendly spot with lawn games and non-alcoholic drinks.

So whether it’s a wine tasting, a good meal, or just soaking up the views, Traverse City makes it easy to enjoy the simple things—with the kids right there beside you.

Downtown

Downtown Traverse City is full of energy in the summer. Front Street is the heart of it all. It has shops, bookstores, and ice cream stops. These places are fun to explore with kids. Horizon Books is a must—we always pop in to cool off and let the kids pick a book for the beach. After that, we like to grab ice cream at Moomers or Milk & Honey. These spots are big hits with little ones and grown-ups alike.

The State Theatre is another favorite. This classic movie house is beautiful inside, and it’s a fun place to take a break on a hot afternoon. The popcorn alone is worth the stop. For a bit of extra fun, there’s Clinch Park right nearby. The splash pad, playground, and marina walkway make it easy to spend a full day downtown.

And if you’re looking for something different, check out what’s happening at the City Opera House. They sometimes have family-friendly shows or community events. It’s the kind of downtown where you can take it slow, grab a treat, and enjoy the simple moments together.
