It seems as though wherever I end up in my travels, I always gravitate to a bookstore. From postcards to puzzles and fiction to nonfiction, there’s endless adventure and possibility in store when making a purchase from a bookstore. There’s something particularly special though about the quaint independent booksellers across the Mitten State. Here’s a few that I’ve visited and feel are worth the road trip.

Horizon Books – Traverse City
On a recent trip to Traverse City, my first stop Downtown was to Horizon Books. While providing a cozy small-town feel, this bookstore is far from small with an expansive two stories to explore. Stop in and stay awhile with various menu options in the cafe. Horizon Books is open from 7 am to 10 pm daily and has a variety of upcoming events and book signings featured on their website.Â
Best-selling author Abby Jimenez recently visited the area and signed all the copies of her books in-store. (Learn more about Abby Jimenez here.)
The Island Bookstore – Mackinac IslandÂ
Perfectly situated within the Lilac Tree Hotel on Main Street, The Island Bookstore features a great selection of all things Mackinac! In addition, they offer a wide variety of other books throughout the bookshop. Stepping into this adorable store feels more like an experience than simply book shopping. The store is only open from May through October, so plan accordingly.

The Cottage Book Shop – Glen Arbor
Just as its name describes, The Cottage Book Shop is a rustic retreat for readers of all ages. The beautiful log cabin appears to be something from a book or movie itself, providing a space that is worthy for its own sake! While the interior of the shop isn’t particularly large, you will be wowed by the number of books found within this cozy book shop.Â

All Booked UpÂ
Two more locations round out my list:
- Reader’s World in HollandÂ
- The Bookstore in FrankfortÂ
They’re equally fantastic and worth checking out.
While creating memories across The Mitten, take a moment to explore one or more of these Michigan bookstores. Friendly and knowledgeable staff are always willing to help answer any questions and assist you in finding the perfect read. These bookstores provide more than just books, but offer community and character making them more than worth the trip. So grab a book or two and head to the water for some lakeside leisurely reading.
Not planning on checking out these areas soon? You can still support these booksellers from the comfort of home. Visit their websites for book selections and shipping details.Â
