If your crew loves a good fireworks show (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t?), mark your calendar for Friday, September 5 and Saturday, September 6. That’s when Turtle Creek Stadium lights up—literally—for the International Fireworks Championship, and it’s one of the most unforgettable weekends Traverse City has to offer.

What’s the Big Deal?

Imagine six award-winning pyrotechnic teams from across the globe—China, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Canada, and the USA—all choreographing massive, colorful firework displays to music. They’ll each get 15 minutes to blow our minds, and these aren’t your backyard boomers. These are the best of the best, and yes, the audience gets to vote for the winner.

We love that it’s part show, part friendly competition, and completely magical. As a bonus, the winning team from the UK will be back on Friday for an encore performance, and Saturday closes out with a grand finale designed by expert judges. Bring ear protection for little ones—it’s loud but thrilling in the best way.

What Moms Will Love

Aside from the jaw-dropping sky art, this event is clean, organized, and family-friendly. Kids get the joy of staying up late for something truly special. Parents get a safe, well-run venue with bathrooms, parking, and concessions that won’t require a second mortgage.

Traverse City in early September still has warm, lake-hugged days and crisp, cozy nights—the perfect combo for a weekend trip. Whether you turn this into a full family road trip or just a quick weekend escape, you’ll leave with starry eyes and sleepy smiles.

Need a Place to Stay?

Look into hotels or vacation rentals in Traverse City early. If you’re going the hotel route, places with pools or breakfast included are always a win for families. Great Wolf Lodge in Traverse City is always a winner with my kids. If you’re traveling with grandparents or friends, a rental with a kitchen and multiple bedrooms might be a better fit.

Don’t Forget to Pack:

  • Cozy blankets and sweatshirts for nightfall
  • Noise-canceling headphones for sensitive ears
  • Folding chairs if you choose general seating
  • A camera or phone with lots of storage—you’ll want to remember this show

There’s just something about fireworks that brings out the kid in all of us. When you add in international flair, perfectly synced music, and a community of oohing and aahing families, it becomes more than an event—it’s a memory-maker. If your family is looking for one last hurrah before fall routines take over, this weekend in Traverse City delivers.

See you under the stars.
