Where to Dine in Grand Rapids: MDRD’s Spanish Menu with a View

Written by

Perched on the 27th floor of the Amway Grand Plaza’s Glass Tower, MDRD (pronounced Madrid) brings the vibrant spirit of Spain to the skyline of Grand Rapids. From the moment the elevator doors open, MDRD feels like a celebration—a perfect place to mark a special occasion or simply enjoy a night out with family.

Panoramic Views and Sophisticated Atmosphere

The setting itself is breathtaking.

A cozy leather booth awaited our family, tucked into a corner. The floor-to-ceiling windows framed a view of the helipad at the JW Marriott and the iconic Blue Bridge. We watched in awe as a predatory bird fished in the Grand River below. Nature and city life unfold together as the sun danced on the water below us.

To be sure, MDRD is clearly a popular spot for anniversaries and date nights. That said, the atmosphere remains relaxed, and each table feels private and intimate. Even celebrating summer with three boys, this space felt friendly and welcoming.

Spanish-Inspired Cuisine That Surprises and Delights

The menu reflects modern Spanish cuisine with an emphasis on shareable plates and fresh, thoughtful ingredients.

After settling in, our evening begins with mocktails, including a refreshing Elote: fruity, iced, and bright with a mint garnish.

The highlights of our meal were many:

  • The Ora King Salmon al Horno was delicately prepared, served with rosemary-citrus bomba rice, fava beans, marinated tomato, and mojo de ajo. It’s a fine balance of bold flavors and light textures.
  • Wild Boar Empanadas were the surprise hit of the night. Tender, savory, and perfectly crisped, these were unanimously voted the dish we wished we’d ordered more of.
  • Chuleta Iberico, a perfectly grilled Iberian pork chop with romesco, lentils, and lemon-oregano vinaigrette, delighted my middle son. Of course, he guarded his plate closely. There were no leftovers.

Decadent Desserts

As for dessert, my choice is a classic and satisfying creme brulee paired with coffee, but the boys are drawn to MDRD’s sculptural sweets. They order show-stopping creations made of chocolate and spun cotton candy that doubled as entertainment at the table.

An Inviting Wine Program

MDRD also offers a curated wine program, including Uncorked wine classes led by Wine Specialist Michael Bryant. These intimate gatherings pair wines with meats and bread straight from the MDRD kitchen—an experience worth reserving for future visits.

A Grand Rapids Experience Worth Booking

Service was attentive but never overbearing, and our waiter Terrence—”Call me T”—was a highlight, winning over even the pickiest of eaters and encouraging them to try new flavors.

For visitors or locals looking to pair stunning views with exceptional cuisine, MDRD is an experience that will linger long after dessert. Whether it’s a date night, anniversary, or simply a reason to celebrate summer, this restaurant proves that fine dining can feel sophisticated but welcoming—even with kids in tow.
