Calumet, Michigan is already known for its Finnish, Cornish, and Italian heritage, but its Slavic roots are just as vibrant—and now they’re being celebrated in a big way. The inaugural CroFest, a festival dedicated to Croatian and Slovenian culture, will take place August 9–10, 2025, just a week before the popular Pasty Fest. Together, these back-to-back festivals make Calumet a must-visit summer destination.

A Festival Steeped in History and Heritage
CroFest isn’t just another summer festival—it’s part of the Village of Calumet’s 150th anniversary (sesquicentennial) celebrations. At the same time, the historic Calumet Theatre is marking its 125th year, adding to the sense of occasion. The event will take place right on Calumet’s iconic Fifth Street, where Slovenian-American labor activist Anna “Big Annie” Klobuchar Clemenc once marched, connecting today’s festivities with Calumet’s rich immigrant past.

Authentic Balkan Flavors
Visitors can look forward to a mouthwatering menu of authentic Balkan cuisine. Food vendors will serve specialties like ćevapčići—grilled minced beef, lamb, and pork kebabs served with flatbread, onions, and ajvar—and sarma, traditional stuffed cabbage rolls. Sweet treats such as povitica (nut-filled pastry), strudel, and fritule (Slavic-style doughnuts) will round out the culinary offerings.
Some of the region’s best chefs will be on hand, including Chicago’s Phil Vucinic and Copper Country’s Gary Uren, who will prepare these beloved dishes the old-fashioned way. Food tickets can be purchased on the day of the event at tents outside the festival grounds.

Music, Dance, and Family Fun
CroFest’s entertainment lineup celebrates Slavic music and dance, featuring performances by the Tamburitzans, America’s longest-running multicultural dance group, and Chicago’s Pajdaši Tamburaši. Throughout the weekend, festivalgoers can take part in kolo dance lessons led by renowned choreographer Steve Taran from Detroit’s Nova Nada.
In addition to music and dance, families can enjoy a round of bocce ball or explore the Kid’s Korner, where children can paint wooden ornaments and participate in crafts all day long. The festival atmosphere promises plenty of energy, laughter, and an authentic taste of Calumet’s Slavic heritage.

More Than a Festival: A Community Story
Calumet’s connection to its Slovenian and Croatian roots runs deep. CroFest isn’t just about food and entertainment—it’s about reconnecting with the stories and spirit that shaped this community. Festivalgoers can meet experts like Robert Jerin, who will be sharing travel tips, genealogical resources, and insight into South Slav history in the Copper Country.
With cultural souvenirs, arts and crafts, genealogy talks, and delicious cuisine, CroFest invites all ages to discover the traditions that helped build Calumet.

Plan Your Visit
CroFest is free and open to the whole community, making it an ideal family-friendly summer getaway. Join the festivities August 9–10, 2025, and experience one of Michigan’s most culturally rich towns at its best—right before Pasty Fest kicks off the following weekend.
