All Aboard! Ride Michigan’s Only Steam-Powered Train in Copper Country

It’s not every day that a piece of living history rumbles back to life — but this summer in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, you can hear the whistle blow once again. After years of sitting silent, the Calumet & Hecla Mine #3 Steam Locomotive is back on the tracks at the Houghton County Historical Museum in Lake Linden. And yes, you can ride it.

Built in 1915, this steam-powered beauty once hauled copper, supplies, and miners through Michigan’s Copper Country during the height of its industrial boom. Today, it’s the only operating steam locomotive in the region, lovingly restored and recertified by the Houghton County Historical Society.

The Ride

The ride isn’t long — just a scenic half-mile loop — but it’s rich with atmosphere. You’ll board the historic passenger cars, feel the gentle chug of the engine, and get a sense of what travel was like over a century ago. The tracks wind through the museum grounds, passing historic structures and offering a view into the Keweenaw’s mining legacy.

For kids, it’s pure magic. The sound of the whistle, the puff of steam, the slow roll along the rails — it’s a chance to see history in motion, not just behind glass.

The Museum

The Houghton County Historical Museum is more than a backdrop for the train. Inside, three floors of exhibits tell the story of the region’s copper mining, logging, and community history. A newer addition — the Veteran’s Room — honors Houghton County service members past and present.

The museum is open daily from noon to 4 p.m. through September, then Fridays through Sundays in October. Admission is affordable, with train rides ranging from free for little ones (ages 0–3) to $6 for adults.

Making a Day of It

Lake Linden might be a small town, but it’s surrounded by big experiences. After your train ride, grab lunch or a sweet treat at Lindell’s Chocolate Shoppe, or stop in at The Loading Zone II for a hearty bite.

If the weather’s nice, take a short drive to Torch Lake, a local favorite for boating, swimming, and even watching seaplanes take off for Isle Royale National Park.

Planning Your Visit

Train rides run on select days, so it’s worth checking the schedule at houghtonhistory.org before you go. Whether you’re a train enthusiast, a history buff, or just looking for a fun family outing, this is a rare chance to experience a living piece of Copper Country’s story.

So gather the kids, pack the camera, and get ready to hear the whistle blow. The Calumet & Hecla Mine #3 Steam Locomotive is rolling again — and it’s ready to take you on a ride into Michigan history.
