Frankenmuth is known as Michigan’s “Little Bavaria,” and while the Bavarian Inn and iconic covered bridge might be the most photographed landmarks, one of the best ways to experience the town is by water. The Bavarian Belle Riverboat offers a one-hour narrated cruise along the Cass River that combines history, nature, and the charm of a family-run attraction.

A Riverboat with History
The Bavarian Belle is a 150-passenger, stern-driven paddlewheel boat that has been lovingly operated by a father and his sons since 1999. Captains Mitch, Jene, and Stan brought the boat up from Arkansas and carefully restored it, ensuring every detail reflected both authenticity and hospitality. Today, the family still runs every tour, with narration that captures Frankenmuth’s unique history and culture.
The boat itself has two levels—an enclosed lower salon and a canopied open-air upper deck—making it comfortable in a variety of weather conditions. The lower deck is fully handicap accessible, with restrooms, snack bar, and even a small gallery of Captain Jene’s wildlife photography.

A Narrated Tour with Heart
When my three sons and I boarded the Bavarian Belle on a rainy morning, I wasn’t sure what to expect. We started on the top deck under the canopy, where a young crew member walked through with baskets of freshly popped, buttery popcorn for sale. As we settled in, Captain Jene’s narration began.

My middle son, George, leaned over and whispered, “Mom, not to sound weird, but I could listen to him talk all day. It sounds like he’s reading us a book, but not in a bad way.” He was right. Jene’s voice, knowledge, and enthusiasm transformed the cruise from sightseeing into storytelling.
Throughout the tour, he pointed out everything from Frankenmuth landmarks like the Bavarian Inn Lodge and Marv Herzog Hotel, to wildlife along the riverbanks. We learned where dragonflies lay their eggs, spotted an osprey, and got a peek into the river’s ecosystem. At one point, Jene grabbed his camera mid-narration to capture a bird in flight—reminding us how much passion he brings to every tour.

By the time we moved downstairs to explore the snack bar and his photo gallery, it was clear this wasn’t just a tourist attraction. It was a family’s love letter to their hometown.
