‘Tis the season to stay warm and cozy indoors with a good book. Each year, I set out to discover new Michigan authors to read and highlight, and this list brings together some of my favorites. You are sure to recognize a few names and discover some new gems, but all five are certainly worth exploring. So light the fire, pour a warm beverage, and settle in. There is a book for you from one of these talented Michigan writers.

Twice by Mitch Albom

Mitch Albom – I can recall reading Tuesdays with Morrie many years ago as the first book I picked up by Mitch Albom. Recommended by many, it was a hit that later became a movie. Fast forward to 2025. Albom’s books have collectively sold 42 million copies worldwide and have been made into Emmy Award-winning television movies. Albom is the author of seven #1 NY Times bestsellers, with four that have been made into highly acclaimed television movies for ABC.

His latest book, Twice: A Novel, was released in October. Selected as a Good Morning America book club pick, Twice is a magical romance. It explores second chances and considers the question: If you could live moments twice, would you? Do you end up better off in the end or not?

Michigan readers can meet Albom at upcoming signing events at various Barnes & Noble locations. See his website and Instagram for details.

The House of Stones by Kathryn Rankin Covington

Kathryn Rankin Covington – After reading Kathryn Rankin Covington’s The House of Stones shortly after its release in July, I knew I had to add her to my favorites list. The House of Stones is the prequel to her debut novel, The Ripple of Stones. It is a read that is full of mystery, adventure, and romance.

The House of Stones is set in 1800s Nova Scotia and inspired by the true story of Nellie Young.  I was immediately swept away by Covington’s storytelling as the main character, Anya, discovers the mystical lore of the Stone Society, only to be heartbroken and sent across the waters to Montreal and, ultimately, Northern Michigan. Covington’s writing is captivating and spans across genres, making it a perfect choice for a variety of book lovers.

In addition to being an author, Covington is a professional vocalist and middle school educator. Learn more about Covington on her website, where you can sign up for her newsletter and enter to win a copy of The House of Stones.

Pieces of You by Jessica Gomez

Jessica Gomez – In August, I had the chance to sit down with Michigan author Jessica Gomez and talk about Pieces of You, her writing journey, and the inspiration behind her debut.

Pieces of You is a haunting thriller that follows Nora Aberdeen’s emotional investigation into suspicious female deaths. It blends psychological tension with a heartfelt exploration of grief and relationships while keeping readers on edge until the final page.

Chevy in the Hole by Kelsey Ronan

Kelsey Ronan – Kelsey Ronan grew up in Flint, Michigan, and is the author of Chevy in the Hole, published in 2022. Chevy in the Hole isA New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice, was named a Michigan Notable Book for 2023, and a Finalist for the 2022 Heartland Booksellers Award.

Ronan’s debut work is a thought-provoking piece that explores the resilience of the people of Flint, woven into a compelling love story of Monae and Gus. Monae and Gus have a complicated bond built on shared history and difficult times. Their relationship is simultaneously tender and heartbreaking, as they navigate their lives together and the challenges they face. Through beautifully crafted timelines, the story seamlessly weaves together the history, heart, and traditions of a city and its community.

Page Turner by Viola Shipman

Viola Shipman – Viola Shipman is the pen name of Wade Rouse, which serves to honor his grandmother. USA TODAY, Publishers Weekly, and #1 international best selling author, Wade Rouse has penned twenty-one books, including memoirs, holiday novellas, and Michigan-set novels.

Since meeting Wade Rouse in May, I have continued to follow his work and am eager to read his upcoming release, That’s What Friends Are For, in early March of 2026.

Looking for winter vibes from Shipman, check out The Secret of Snow, A Wish for Winter, or The Wishing Bridge (my favorite!). Lots of excellent choices for fireside reading during this Michigan snowy season.
