There’s a reason Oval Beach is the beach everyone tells you to visit in Saugatuck.
Tucked between Lake Michigan, rolling dunes, and the Kalamazoo River, Oval Beach manages to feel beautifully removed from town even though downtown Saugatuck is just across the river. There are no towering hotels lining the shore and no busy boardwalk competing for attention. Instead, families get soft sand, Lake Michigan, dune grass, and plenty of room to settle in for the day.
And unlike some of Michigan’s wilder dune beaches, getting to the water doesn’t require a major hike.
For families, that combination of natural beauty and easy access is what makes Oval Beach special. Give it one sunny afternoon, and you’ll understand why it has become one of Michigan’s best-known beaches.

Where Is Oval Beach?
Oval Beach is located at 690 Perryman Street in Saugatuck, along the Lake Michigan shoreline in southwest Michigan.
The beach sits west of downtown Saugatuck, separated from town by the Kalamazoo River. You can drive directly to the beach, making it considerably easier with coolers, beach chairs, umbrellas, and kids than many of the area’s more remote beaches.
Oval Beach is a City of Saugatuck park, not a Michigan state park, so a Michigan Recreation Passport does not cover parking.
For the 2026 summer season, a daily vehicle pass is $15, and a season pass is $75. The seasonal parking fee is collected from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Cash and credit cards are accepted at the beach gate.
The park is open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Why Families Love Oval Beach
Oval Beach gives families something that isn’t always easy to find along Michigan’s dune-lined coast: spectacular scenery without a difficult trip to the shoreline.
You can park near the beach and walk toward Lake Michigan without navigating hundreds of stairs or hiking over a dune first.
Once you’re there, you’ll find a wide sandy shoreline backed by rolling dunes and dune grass.
During the summer, the beach has permanent restrooms, picnic areas, concessions, and accessible facilities. The concession stand operates seasonally, with hours that vary based on weather, staffing, and demand.
There’s enough here to make a full beach day comfortable without turning Oval Beach into an amusement-filled waterfront.
And that’s part of its appeal.
Come here to go to the beach.
What Is the Beach Like?
Oval Beach feels a little less developed than some of Michigan’s other famous family beaches.
There isn’t a lighthouse dominating the view like Grand Haven or Holland. There isn’t a carousel and splash fountain waiting beyond the sand like Silver Beach.
Instead, the scenery is the attraction.
Lake Michigan stretches out in front of you, while dunes rise behind the beach. The nearby Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area protects even more of the surrounding landscape.
The sandy shoreline gives kids plenty of room for digging, building, and playing. When Lake Michigan is calm, families can spend hours moving between the water and sand.
But this is still Lake Michigan.
Conditions can change quickly, and Oval Beach does not have lifeguards. Swimming is at your own risk.
For families with young or inexperienced swimmers, that makes checking conditions and staying close especially important.

Climb Mount Baldhead
If your family considers a few hundred stairs part of a good vacation, Mount Baldhead gives you an entirely different way to experience this part of Saugatuck.
Start near downtown by crossing the Kalamazoo River aboard the Saugatuck Chain Ferry, a hand-operated ferry that has become an attraction in its own right.
From there, head toward Mount Baldhead and start climbing.
You’ll tackle roughly 300 stairs to reach the top, where the reward is a view over the Kalamazoo River, downtown Saugatuck, and the surrounding landscape. Trails continue through the dunes toward Lake Michigan and Oval Beach.
This can turn a straightforward beach day into an adventure for families with older kids.
Just remember one thing before deciding to hike to the beach: whatever you carry in, you’ll be carrying with you.
If your family travels to the beach with a cooler, umbrella, beach tent, six towels, sand toys, and enough snacks to survive until Tuesday, drive.

What Else Can Families Do?
One of the best parts of choosing Oval Beach is everything surrounding it.
Spend the morning exploring downtown Saugatuck, where the compact streets make it easy to wander among shops, galleries, parks, and the waterfront.
Take the Chain Ferry.
Climb Mount Baldhead.
Explore some of the trails around the dunes.
Or make the beach the finale instead of the beginning.
Saugatuck’s location on the Kalamazoo River also means families can get out on the water in other ways. Boat tours travel the river toward Lake Michigan, and the surrounding Saugatuck-Douglas area offers kayaking, paddleboarding, and other water activities.
But Oval Beach doesn’t need an itinerary.
Bring a picnic. Build a sandcastle. Walk the shoreline. Stay for sunset.
That’s enough.

Know Before You Swim
There are no lifeguards at Oval Beach. Swimming is at your own risk.
That matters.
Lake Michigan can look deceptively calm from shore, and waves, currents, and weather conditions can change during the course of a day.
Keep young children and inexperienced swimmers within close reach. Don’t let kids swim alone, and be particularly cautious whenever waves begin building.
Before your visit, check the weather, Lake Michigan conditions, and any current water-quality advisories or closures.
If the lake looks rough, make it a sandcastle-and-shoreline day.
There’s no rule that says visiting a beach requires swimming.
Accessibility at Oval Beach
This is one area where Oval Beach particularly stands out.
There are no stairs required to reach the beach, and accessible parking and restrooms are available.
A boardwalk extends toward Lake Michigan, making it easier for visitors using wheelchairs and other mobility devices to get closer to the shoreline.
The beach also has both a sand-ready beach wheelchair and a floating beach wheelchair available for use.
Families who need a specific accessibility accommodation should confirm equipment availability before arriving, especially during busy summer periods.
Skip the Parking Hassle
Oval Beach is popular.
Really popular.
During peak summer periods, the parking area can temporarily reach capacity. If you’re visiting on a sunny summer weekend or holiday, arriving early is your best bet.
If you don’t want to gamble on parking, there is another option.
The Interurban provides local transportation around Saugatuck and Douglas and can take passengers to Oval Beach. The service is wheelchair accessible and can be an inexpensive alternative to driving and parking.
For families staying in the Saugatuck-Douglas area, it’s worth considering.
Know Before You Go
Oval Beach is open year-round, but the main summer season runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
During that period, the park is open from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m., and the 2026 daily vehicle pass costs $15.
Restrooms are open daily during the season, and concessions are available seasonally. Because concession hours can depend on weather, staffing, and demand, bring enough food and water that your beach day doesn’t depend on them being open.
There are also a few rules families should know before packing the car.
Dogs are not permitted from Memorial Day weekend through September 30. Alcohol, smoking, fires, and personal grilling are prohibited. Visitors should also stay off the dune grass and remain on designated trails.
Bring your own beach chairs and umbrella because rentals aren’t available at the beach. Pack sunscreen, water, towels, snacks, sand toys, and enough shade for a long afternoon.
Then stay later than you planned.
As evening settles over Oval Beach, the crowds begin to thin and Lake Michigan takes over the show.
Find a spot in the sand. Let the kids squeeze in one last shoreline walk.
Then watch the sun disappear into the lake.
For all the attention Oval Beach has received over the years, its best feature is still the simplest one: this is an exceptionally beautiful place to spend a day together.
