There is something wonderfully unexpected about watching a hot air balloon slowly rise above the brilliant blue water of Little Traverse Bay. During Balloons Over Bay Harbor, the waterfront village just outside Petoskey becomes one of northern Michigan’s most colorful destinations, with enormous balloons overhead, glowing balloons after dark, local makers lining Main Street, and families gathered along the marina.
The annual September festival draws thousands of spectators and is an easy centerpiece for a fall weekend in the Petoskey area.
Start With the Balloons
Under ideal conditions, balloons launch from the Bay Harbor Marina Lawn, where families can watch crews unfurl the colorful fabric, inflate the balloons and eventually send them floating above the shoreline.
But there’s one important rule for this weekend: follow the weather, not a rigid itinerary.
Every balloon flight is weather-dependent, and wind conditions can change both launch locations and plans. Check Bay Harbor’s official updates throughout the weekend and be prepared to rearrange your day.
Fortunately, there’s plenty happening on the ground, too. The festival includes an Artisan Market on Main Street, food trucks and family activities. Saturday programming also includes the Bay Harbor Bow Wow dog show fundraiser and opportunities for tethered balloon rides.
Save an Evening for the Night Glow
Even if your family doesn’t catch a balloon floating across the bay, don’t miss the Night Glow.
After sunset, the balloons remain tethered to the ground while their burners dramatically illuminate the giant envelopes from within. Suddenly the marina lawn is filled with enormous glowing balloons against the dark September sky.
The 2026 festival plans Night Glows for both Friday and Saturday evenings.
Arrive early, wander through the village, grab dinner and give yourself time to find a good viewing spot. This is the part of the weekend we’d plan around.
Turn Saturday Into a Northern Michigan Adventure
If you’re staying for the weekend, Saturday morning offers some unusually good choices.
Runners can start the day at Lavender Hill Farm in Boyne City, where the second annual Lavender Hill Run winds through the farm’s rolling hills, flower gardens and freshly harvested lavender fields. Afterward, linger for a lavender treat and explore the scenic property.
Or head to Boyne Mountain for something completely different. Yoga in the Sky combines a guided hike up the mountain with a 45-minute yoga class on SkyBridge Michigan, followed by access to the bridge and scenic chairlift. The experience runs on Saturdays through September.
Then return to Bay Harbor for the afternoon festival activities, balloon launch and Night Glow.
Add a Little Theater
For families with older kids, festival weekend offers another unusually good addition.
The Great Lakes Center for the Arts, right in Bay Harbor, is presenting Come From Away during the 2026 festival weekend. The moving musical tells the true story of thousands of airline passengers diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, following the September 11 attacks and the community that welcomed them. The theater describes the production as generally family-friendly while noting mild language, brief adult moments and mature subject matter.
That makes dinner, balloons and a show an especially memorable option for families with teens.
Make Sunday the Slow Day
Before heading home, slow things down.
Drive to Harbor Springs and spend part of the day at Pond Hill Farm, where families can explore a working farm and enjoy food, trails, farm activities and the relaxed northern Michigan countryside.
There’s no need to cram another major attraction into the weekend. After two days of balloons and festival crowds, a leisurely farm stop followed by a scenic drive home may be exactly right.

Balloons Over Bay Harbor works best when you build a weekend around it instead of building your entire weekend on it.
Hot air balloons simply can’t operate on demand. A perfectly planned launch can change with the wind.
So give your family options. Explore Bay Harbor. Wander through the artisan market. Add Boyne City or Harbor Springs. Stay for the magical Night Glow. Look up occasionally as you’re driving around Little Traverse Bay because you never know when a brightly colored balloon might quietly appear overhead.
If the weather cooperates, you’ll get those spectacular balloons-over-the-bay views you came for.
And if it doesn’t? You’ll still have spent a beautiful September weekend in one of Michigan’s loveliest corners.
