Why May in Traverse City Is the Best Time to Visit

According to Traverse City Tourism President Trevor Tkach, “May is a season of rebirth.” More than two million cherry trees are in bloom, creating a stunning backdrop across the region. At the same time, winemakers are showcasing their most creative varietals. It’s the perfect season to stroll vineyard rows, relax on a patio, and raise a glass to spring.

Even better? Traverse City’s wine country—spanning the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsulas—produces 60% of all Michigan wine. The region’s unique microclimate, bordered by Lake Michigan bays, is ideal for cool-climate grapes like Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. That means you’ll get not only delicious pours but stunning lake views at nearly every stop.

If you’re overdue for a quiet escape or planning a Mother’s Day celebration, May is the ideal time to visit Traverse City.

With more than 40 participating wineries and scenic trails through the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsulas, Traverse City Uncorked is made for catching up with friends over great wine. A Traverse City wine getaway for moms offers the perfect mix of relaxation, conversation, and cool-climate pours.
