Let’s be honest. When you’re planning a day trip with kids, keeping them happy (and fed, and safe, and reasonably entertained) is a full-time job. Add in high ticket prices? No, thank you. Luckily, Detroit is full of family-friendly adventures that won’t cost you a dime.
Whether you’ve got toddlers or tweens, this list of the best free things to do in Detroit with kids will help you plan a day that’s fun, flexible, and full of surprise. And it will leave plenty of room in the budget for ice cream.

Belle Isle Park
Belle Isle is Detroit’s crown jewel, and it’s 100% free to explore on foot or bike. Wander the Belle Isle Conservatory (now reopened after a massive renovation). Enjoy the sandy beach on the Detroit River. Run wild on the huge playscape. Just don’t miss the James Scott Memorial Fountain, especially when it’s on and dancing.
Parking requires a Michigan Recreation Passport, but entry is free, so park nearby and walk or bike across the bridge for a full experience. Check the official Belle Isle page for seasonal activities and open hours.

Detroit Riverwalk
Stretching several miles along the water, the Detroit Riverwalk is a family favorite and stroller-friendly paradise. Walk along the wide path, watch the boats go by, and stop at the Rivard Plaza carousel or splash pad (they’re not always open, but when they are, it’s magic).
There are bathrooms, shaded benches, and snack carts nearby, plus easy access to the Dequindre Cut (see below) if your kids are up for a longer stroll or scooter ride.

Outdoor Art and Murals in Eastern Market
Art doesn’t need to be indoors. The Murals in the Market project has transformed Detroit’s Eastern Market into a living, breathing art gallery. Park and wander the streets, snapping photos of massive, colorful walls. Grab a drink at nearby Germack Coffee Roasting Co. and make it a morning art walk.
Bonus: Older kids can try a DIY photo scavenger hunt. Snap a pic with the biggest mural, a mural with a face, one with animals, etc.

Campus Martius and Splash Pads
Downtown’s Campus Martius Park is where the city gathers no matter the season. In summer, the urban beach is open with real sand and colorful beach chairs. Plus, there are often free concerts, dance performances, and “pop-up” fun.
Nearby, Beacon Park features a light-up playscape, plenty of space to run, and an interactive splash pad. Check the Downtown Detroit Partnership events calendar for a lineup of family-friendly activities, most of which are totally free.

DNR Outdoor Adventure Center (Walk the Grounds)
While the inside of the Outdoor Adventure Center does have a small entry fee, the grounds are totally free to explore. Walk along the river, explore the nearby Dequindre Cut (more on that below), and check out the educational signs and green space out front.
It’s also a great place to pause for a snack or diaper change, even if you’re not heading inside.
Dequindre Cut Greenway
This two-mile urban trail connects the Riverwalk to Eastern Market and is lined with graffiti art, sculptures, and greenery. It’s wide, safe, and ideal for walking, biking, or scooting.
Older kids love the underpass murals and the vibe, while younger ones just enjoy the wide open path. It’s especially beautiful in the morning or early evening.

People Watching at Hart Plaza
Located right on the waterfront, Hart Plaza is a central hub for festivals and events. Even when there’s nothing official going on, it’s a great place for kids to run around, spot the “Transcending” monument (part of Detroit’s labor history), and take in views of Canada across the water.
Bring bubbles, snacks, and a few scooters—and you’ve got a free, open space with lots of personality.

The Lincoln Street Art Park and the Big Tire
For a dose of funky, recycled art and photo ops, drive by the Lincoln Street Art Park or take a quick trip to see the giant Uniroyal Tire off I-94. Both are quirky, free, and great for adding a little “only in Detroit” vibe to your family adventure.

Pro Tips for Free Family Fun in Detroit
- Pack snacks and water bottles. While Detroit has amazing food, keeping a few kid-friendly snacks on hand can stretch the day.
- Use a parking app. Downtown Detroit has metered parking and lots—apps like Park Detroit help you avoid overpaying.
- Time your trip right. Mid-mornings or early evenings are ideal for avoiding crowds and enjoying cooler temps in summer.
- Make it a walking day. Most of these free attractions are within walking or biking distance from each other if you plan your route right.
