Making Long Miles Feel Short

A good road trip shouldn’t feel like something the family has to endure. A few smart comforts can turn five hours in the car into part of the adventure.

There is only so much you can do about traffic, construction or the number of miles between here and there. But you can make the car a much nicer place to spend them.

The goal isn’t to bring more stuff. It’s to pack a few things that help everyone settle in and get comfortable.

1. Bring a Good Travel Pillow

Sleeping in the car sounds great until you wake up with your head at an impossible angle. A compact travel pillow gives passengers a little support without taking up half the back seat.

2. Give Everyone a Blanket

A lightweight throw solves one of the great family road-trip debates: the temperature.

Choose something soft, washable and small enough to roll up when nobody needs it.

3. Block the Sun

Hours of afternoon sun through a side window can make even a beautiful drive uncomfortable. Sunglasses and simple window shades can make a surprisingly big difference, particularly for passengers trying to sleep.

4. Pack Headphones

Sometimes comfort means quiet.

A comfortable pair of headphones lets one person listen to an audiobook while someone else watches a movie, sleeps or simply stares out the window.

5. Add a Lap Desk or Tray

For kids and teens, a simple travel tray creates a place for drawing, reading, playing a game or even finishing a little homework.

Keep it lightweight and easy to store when it isn’t being used.

6. Keep the Little Comforts Close

Lip balm. Hand lotion. Hair ties. Tissues. Gum. An extra pair of socks.

None of these qualifies as serious road-trip gear, but they’re exactly the things someone starts asking for three hours from home. Put them together in one small pouch and keep it accessible.

7. Make Getting Cozy Part of the Trip

A soft blanket, a supportive pillow and a few small comforts can make a surprisingly big difference on a long drive. We’ve gathered the simple things we like having along for the ride in one easy-to-shop list.
