How Long Are the Flights?

Northern Flights currently offers two standard scenic tours:

• 30-minute scenic flight: $100 per person, with a two-passenger minimum
• 45-minute scenic flight: $150 per person, with a two-passenger minimum
• Custom flights: Routes and durations can be customized

The standard tours follow established flight paths, but passengers who have a particular landmark or area they hope to see can contact Northern Flights before their trip. Customization may be possible depending on the requested location and available flight time.

Can Kids Take a Scenic Flight?

Yes, making this an especially interesting addition to a family trip through the Upper Peninsula.

Northern Flights welcomes children ages 3 and older. Every passenger needs an individual seat and is included in the per-person price.

The airplane’s headsets can generally be adjusted for smaller passengers, although fit can vary by child. Disposable earplugs are also available upon request.

For a child who has only experienced commercial air travel, flying in a small Cessna is an entirely different introduction to aviation. Instead of simply getting from one destination to another, the flight itself becomes the adventure.

What If Someone Gets Motion Sick?

Families concerned about turbulence may want to pay particular attention to the time of their flight.

Northern Flights recommends early-morning or later-evening flights for passengers who prefer calmer air and fewer bumps.

That timing comes with another potential benefit: softer light over the Keweenaw can make an already spectacular view even more memorable.

What Happens If Michigan Weather Doesn’t Cooperate?

Weather is always part of the equation when flying in Michigan, particularly in the Upper Peninsula.

Northern Flights recommends booking a few weeks to a month ahead, especially during the popular fall season. But families don’t necessarily need to worry about committing to a flight far in advance when the weather is uncertain.

If weather affects a scheduled flight, Northern Flights says it will work with passengers to move the reservation to another day or time or refund the deposit.

Online reservations close within 24 hours of a desired flight time, but travelers can call or email to ask about last-minute availability.

Make It Part of a Keweenaw Adventure

A scenic flight doesn’t need to take over an entire vacation day. At 30 or 45 minutes, it can become one memorable piece of a larger Keweenaw itinerary.

Spend the rest of the day exploring the peninsula from ground level. Then, after you’ve driven its roads, walked its trails and stood beside Lake Superior, seeing those same places from the air adds another layer to the experience.

For families, that’s part of the appeal.

Everyone gets to experience the view together, and the flight becomes the kind of vacation memory that is likely to be talked about long after you’ve returned home to the Lower Peninsula.
