What We Always Pack to Eat

Road-trip snacks should travel well, keep everyone satisfied and create as little mess as possible. These are the simple foods and drinks worth making room for in the cooler.

A good road-trip snack bag doesn’t need endless choices. A short list is easier to shop for, easier to pack and much easier to manage in the car.

For most trips, think protein + produce + something crunchy, then add plenty of water.

1. Apples, Grapes & Clementines

Choose fruit that can handle a few hours on the road. Apples and clementines travel especially well, and washed grapes are easy to portion ahead of time.

Skip anything overly juicy, delicate or messy.

2. Carrots & Snap Peas

They’re crisp, refreshing and require almost no preparation. Pack them in small containers or reusable bags so they’re easy to hand to passengers.

Single-serve hummus works well if you’re carrying a cooler.

3. Nuts or Simple Trail Mix

Almonds, cashews, pistachios and trail mixes built mostly around nuts, seeds and dried fruit are compact and satisfying.

For nut-free families, roasted chickpeas or sunflower seeds are an easy alternative.

4. Cheese

Cheese sticks, mini cheeses or simple cubes are easy to portion and add protein to the snack bag. Keep them cold in a small cooler.

5. Popcorn

Plain or lightly seasoned popcorn gives everyone something crunchy without feeling especially heavy. Portion it before leaving instead of passing one oversized bag around the car.

6. Simple Snack Bars

Bars are useful when traffic runs long or lunch gets pushed back. Look for options based around oats, nuts, seeds or fruit rather than heavily sweetened varieties.

7. Water

Water should do most of the work.

Fill insulated bottles before leaving and bring extra for refills. Unsweetened sparkling water is an easy way to add variety without loading the cooler with sugary drinks.

The best road-trip snacks are usually the least complicated ones. Pack a few foods everyone already likes, stop for real meals, and let snacks do what they’re supposed to do: get you comfortably to the next stop.
