A Family Stay at The Bavarian Inn Lodge in Frankenmuth, Michigan

Frankenmuth is often called Michigan’s Little Bavaria, and at the heart of it all sits the Bavarian Inn Lodge, a family-owned resort that has welcomed guests since 1986. For over 38 years, this Bavarian-style destination has grown into one of Michigan’s largest indoor water park hotels, offering Old World charm with all the modern amenities families love.

Nestled along the banks of the Cass River, the Lodge is managed by the 3rd and 4th generations of the Zehnder family. With 360 European-themed guest rooms, multiple dining options, and a sprawling Family Fun Center, it’s a true hub for families visiting Frankenmuth.

Our Stay at the Bavarian Inn Lodge

Me and my three boys were lucky to spend the night at the Bavarian Inn. Our cozy room had two queen beds and a rollaway cot, along with a small deck overlooking the Cass River. From there, we could watch the Bavarian Belle Riverboat glide by, adding to the storybook setting. Even better, our room was right next to the family amusement park and Bavarian Blast Waterpark, making it easy for the kids to dart between fun and relaxation.

Each room at the Lodge is decorated with photos of a Frankenmuth family who immigrated here from Germany. That thoughtful touch makes the stay feel warm and personal, almost as if you are visiting a grandparent’s home. There are also plenty of amenities that make families feel comfortable, like the tea and coffee station available all day long—a little perk I definitely appreciated.

Bavarian Blast Waterpark

One of the biggest highlights of our visit was the brand-new Bavarian Blast Waterpark. With 16 waterslides ranging from gentle family rides to daring body slides, a massive Rip Roaring Wave Pool, and the playful “Not So Lazy” River, it offers nonstop fun for kids of all ages. Parents can kick back at Michigan’s first swim-up bar, while private cabanas with TVs and food service provide a cozy retreat between adventures. Best of all, the entire waterpark is indoors and kept at a balmy 80 degrees year-round, so families can enjoy summer fun in Frankenmuth no matter the season.

Dining at the Lodge and Bavarian Inn Restaurant

The Bavarian Inn Lodge offers two restaurants and two lounges onsite, but a highlight of any visit to Frankenmuth is a meal at the adjacent Bavarian Inn Restaurant, famous for its Frankenmuth® Chicken Dinners. With seating for 1,200 guests, it’s one of the largest independent restaurants in the country, serving nearly a million meals annually.

On our visit, we enjoyed the classic chicken dinner—served with buttered noodles and all the fixings—that has been a tradition in Frankenmuth for decades. Staying at the Lodge makes it easy to walk back after a hearty meal and settle in for the night.

Weddings, Events, and Old World Hospitality

The Lodge has banquet facilities for groups up to 500, making it a favorite for weddings, reunions, and conferences. In fact, the resort has hosted more than 2.5 million room-nights since opening its doors. With a top rating on TripAdvisor®, and a reputation for warm service, the Bavarian Inn Lodge remains one of Michigan’s most celebrated family resorts.

Why Families Love It

For my family, the Bavarian Inn Lodge felt like part waterpark vacation, part cozy family getaway. Between the new waterpark, arcade games, and hearty meals, we didn’t even need to leave the property to fill our weekend. Families love the way it blends fun and comfort with cultural touches that celebrate Frankenmuth’s Bavarian roots.

This sweeping resort is the perfect place for Michigan families to escape for a long weekend. With restaurants, pools, and entertainment all onsite, the Bavarian Inn Lodge makes it easy to relax, play, and make memories together.
