There’s something about summer in Detroit that makes me want to get outside and explore, and the award-winning Detroit RiverWalk is one of my favorite places to spend a day. On a sunny afternoon, I loaded up my peach-colored Batch Comfort Bike and headed downtown with my 11-year-old son for a ride along this beautiful stretch of the city.

My Summer Crush- Batch Comfort Bike
My Batch Comfort Bike was perfect for this adventure. The step-thru design made it easy for me to hop on and off as we stopped to explore, grab a snack, or take in the views. Its upright, relaxed style meant I could ride comfortably for hours—especially important when trying to keep up with an energetic tween. Honestly, all I’m missing now is a basket and a bell to complete the look.
Starting at Cullen Plaza
We began our day at Cullen Plaza, one of the most family-friendly spots along the Detroit RiverWalk. While Michael rented a kid’s bike from Wheelhouse Detroit right there at the plaza, I was already rolling along easily on my Batch bike. Cullen Plaza is also home to the beautiful Cullen Family Carousel, which kids can ride while parents relax at the nearby cafe. We grabbed cold drinks, watched families line up for the Detroit River Cruise, and took a few minutes to plan our route before pedaling east.

Stopping at the DNR Outdoor Adventure Center
Just a short ride down the RiverWalk, we pulled into the DNR Outdoor Adventure Center. This indoor museum is packed with interactive exhibits that give kids a fun introduction to Michigan’s outdoors. Michael spent nearly an hour climbing into a real fishing boat, trying out a mountain bike simulator, standing behind a waterfall, and even giving archery a shot. It was a perfect break from the summer sun, and I appreciated how easy it was to park my bike and jump back on when we were ready to go.

Riding Through the Dequindre Cut
Next we rode onto the Dequindre Cut, a wide, paved trail tucked below street level, known for its incredible street art. Nearly every wall along this greenway is covered with colorful murals, graffiti, and public art installations. We stopped several times to admire the work and take some fun selfies together. The smooth ride made it easy to relax and look around, and my Batch Comfort Bike felt perfectly steady as we cruised through this urban art gallery.

Ending at Milliken State Park and Harbor
We wrapped up our afternoon at Milliken State Park and Harbor, one of my favorite spots along the RiverWalk. Here we hopped off our bikes and sat near the river, watching ships and sailboats glide by. The grassy lawn is perfect for relaxing, and the lighthouse at the park made a great photo backdrop for the end of our day.
This ride along the Detroit RiverWalk reminded me why I love biking here—and how much I love my Batch Comfort Bike. The step-thru frame, comfortable seat, and smooth ride let me focus on spending time with my son and enjoying the scenery without worrying about comfort or performance.

Next time, I think I’ll finally add that cute basket and bell I’ve been eyeing—because adventures like this deserve a little extra charm.
