Bavarian Blacksmith Experience: A Hands-On Adventure in Frankenmuth

On a sunny summer afternoon, my boys and I wandered into the Bavarian Blacksmith Experience in Frankenmuth and decided we couldn’t pass up the chance to be blacksmiths for a day. When else would we have the opportunity to heat, hammer, and forge our own creations? We purchased the entry-level package, eager to see what we could make with fire, steel, and a little determination.

My boys chose to make blades while I picked out a marshmallow roaster. Blacksmithing, I quickly learned, is fun—but it’s also real work.

There was plenty of laughter as we teased one another about technique, speed, and hammer power, but the projects turned out surprisingly professional. More importantly, we’ve actually put them to use: my one-of-a-kind roaster has already produced some unforgettable s’mores, and the boys’ blades have been tested on everything from fishing and chopping vegetables to carving sticks in the backyard.

More Than a Demonstration

The Bavarian Blacksmith Experience isn’t your average tourist stop. Here, visitors of all ages get to become the blacksmith. With the help of experienced smiths, families learn how to heat, hammer, and shape red-hot steel into something tangible and useful. From rune pendants and hairpins for little ones to knives, daggers, and roasters for older participants, there’s a project for everyone.

Even better, you don’t just leave with memories—you leave with what you make. Each piece is finished by the shop’s smiths to meet “Forged in Fire” standards, ensuring your handcrafted tool or keepsake is polished and ready to use.

What to Expect When You Visit

The shop is located in the Frankenmuth River Place Shops, a short walk from the Bavarian Inn Lodge and Restaurant, making it a perfect stop during a day of exploring Michigan’s “Little Bavaria.” The setting is as inviting as the experience, with German-inspired architecture, floral gardens, fountains, and plenty of shops and attractions nearby.

A few tips before you go:

  • Age Guidelines: Kids as young as 6 can forge with assistance, while older children and teens can tackle more challenging projects.
  • What to Wear: Closed-toed shoes are best, along with cotton layers since the forge area is warm. Safety glasses and protective coverings are provided.
  • Timing: Projects are usually ready the same day. The shop will call or text when your finished piece is polished and ready for pickup.
  • Appointments: Walk-ins are accepted, but weekends and holidays book up quickly, so reservations are recommended.

Why It’s a Must-Do Frankenmuth Attraction

As a family, we’ve visited countless attractions across Michigan, but this one stands out. The combination of hands-on creativity, a touch of history, and the satisfaction of leaving with something you made yourself makes the Bavarian Blacksmith Experience unforgettable.

It’s not every day kids get to swing a hammer, test their strength, and walk away with a blade they can actually use. And it’s not every day moms get to roast marshmallows with a tool they made with their own two hands. If you’re heading to Frankenmuth, this is one stop I can’t recommend enough.
