Where Tradition Meets Modern Elegance: A Family Dinner at The Perch at Hobby Crest Resort

There’s something extra special about a family dinner on the water — the sunset glow on the lake, the hum of content chatter, kids leaning forward in anticipation of that first bite. On a recent Friday night, my family and I had just such an evening at The Perch at Hobby Crest Resort, and I can’t wait to share all the details with you, especially if you’re planning a getaway or simply want a beautiful place to eat out with your family.

First Impressions & Atmosphere

Being a guest at Hobby Crest has its perks — one of the biggest was snagging a coveted reservation for a Friday night. We drove up Piney Ridge Road to 3264 Piney Ridge Rd, Ludington, MI, and paused at the entrance, knowing that something special was waiting.

Inside, The Perch is light, airy, and welcoming. Big windows let in tons of natural light, and the upstairs views over Hamlin Lake make it feel like you’re floating above a calm, beautiful mirror at sunset. The décor blends modern and rustic styles, with plenty of natural wood, warm lighting, clean lines, and subtle Michigan touches.

As the sun set, the sky turned pink then gold… magic. Live music played from the bar area below, setting a relaxed, festive mood. Even though the restaurant was full, there was no tension — everyone waiting outside seemed content. The view, the music, the promise of good food are powerful endorphin-boosters!

What We Ate (and Loved)

We were five, with a range of appetites: three boys, my husband, and me. We started with something shareable, because that’s always the way to go with kids.

  • Street Corn Dip (Appetizer) — roasted corn, jalapeños, cream cheese, bold spices, with tortilla chips. Warm, just slightly spicy, creamy, tangy — hit all the right notes. It disappeared in minutes.

For our mains:

  • Salmon over Risotto — sweet and savory flavors in perfect balance; it was filling without being heavy. The salmon was cooked just right.
  • Two of the boys had Smash Burgers — juicy, satisfying, simple.
  • My husband and the other son both opted for the Perch Sandwich — crispy fried perch with good seasoning, served with fresh toppings.

Dessert was modest: key lime pie for me, the kids had a slice of chocolate cake.

Service & Family-Friendliness

The staff was friendly, attentive, and used to the ebb and flow of families with kids. They brought water, refilled it, answered questions, and never made us feel hurried. The kids menu offered several good options: fish & chips, mac n’ cheese, flatbread — enough variety to please picky eaters.

If I were giving stars, The Perch deserves plenty — it’s not just about good food, although the food is excellent. It’s about the experience: the view, the atmosphere, the way being somewhere beautiful makes a “simple dinner” feel like an event. It’s perfect for families, couples, or anyone craving good food in a beautiful place.

If you’re considering Ludington or Hamlin Lake for a weekend trip or a special dinner, put The Perch at Hobby Crest on your list. I know we’ll be back.
