What Parents Actually Need for a Great Beach Day

Forget the trendy gear lists. Here are the honest essentials that make a long day at the lake feel a little more like a vacation.

A great family beach day doesn’t require a wagon full of gadgets.

After enough trips to the lake, you start to figure out which things actually make a difference: a comfortable place to sit, enough cold drinks, something that creates shade, and a system for dealing with all the wet, sandy stuff at the end of the day.

The kids have their packing lists. This one’s for you.

1. A Really Good Beach Chair

You’re going to be here awhile.

Choose a chair that’s comfortable enough for several hours but light enough that carrying it from the parking lot doesn’t become its own workout.

Cup holders, backpack straps, and a pocket for your phone are small details you’ll appreciate.

2. Plenty of Shade

Even if you plan to spend most of the day in the water, everyone eventually needs a break from the sun.

A beach umbrella, canopy, or easy-to-set-up shade tent creates a home base for eating lunch, reapplying sunscreen, and simply getting out of the heat.

3. An Insulated Water Bottle

Fill it before you leave home and keep it close.

An insulated bottle that keeps water cold for hours is one of the least exciting things on this list and one of the things you’ll use the most.

4. A Cooler That Isn’t Miserable to Carry

You don’t necessarily need the biggest cooler.

For a family beach day, we like something that’s easy to carry and big enough for drinks, sandwiches, fruit, and plenty of snacks. Backpack coolers are especially helpful when your hands are already full.

5. A Beach Wagon

Is a wagon absolutely necessary? No.

Will you appreciate one when you’re transporting chairs, towels, a cooler, toys, and everything else across the parking lot? Absolutely.

Look for wide wheels designed to handle sand and a frame that folds for the car.

6. A Big Beach Bag

This is where all the miscellaneous stuff goes.

Choose something roomy, washable, and preferably water resistant. An open mesh design can be especially helpful because sand has somewhere to escape instead of coming home with you.

7. A Waterproof Phone Pouch

Water isn’t the only enemy. Sand has an impressive ability to work its way into absolutely everything.

A waterproof pouch gives your phone some protection while keeping it accessible for photos, texts, and checking the weather.

8. A Quick-Dry Towel

Traditional fluffy beach towels are cozy, but they’re also bulky, heavy when wet, and capable of filling an entire beach bag.

A lightweight quick-dry or Turkish-style towel takes up less room and dries faster between swims.

9. Sunscreen You Will Actually Reapply

The best sunscreen is the one you’ll use correctly.

Pack broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen and keep it somewhere easy to reach rather than buried at the bottom of the bag.

Don’t forget yourself while you’re sunscreening everyone else.

10. A Wet Bag

At the beginning of the day, everything is clean and dry.

By the end, you’re dealing with wet swimsuits, damp towels, sandy clothes, and things you can’t even identify anymore.

A waterproof wet bag keeps the mess contained until you get home.

BONUS: Make It Feel Like a Vacation

You’ve handled the logistics. Now pack a few things for yourself.

A Good Book

Will you actually get to read it?

Maybe.

But there is something wonderfully optimistic about putting a book in the beach bag anyway.

An Insulated Tumbler

Coffee on an early beach morning. Iced tea in the afternoon. Whatever makes the day feel a little more chill.

Polarized Sunglasses

Good sunglasses make a noticeable difference around bright water, especially when you’re spending several hours outside.

A Wide-Brimmed Hat

Shade you don’t have to set up.

A comfortable sun hat protects your face and is particularly useful when you’re walking the shoreline or standing at the water watching kids.

A Portable Charger

Between photos, music, weather checks, directions, and teenagers borrowing your phone charger, a small power bank can save the day.

A Waterproof Speaker

A little music can make your family beach setup feel like vacation. Just keep the volume low enough that the family twenty feet away can enjoy their vacation, too.

A Beach Cup Holder

Stick it in the sand next to your chair and suddenly your water bottle, sunglasses, phone, and sunscreen have somewhere to live besides the bottom of the beach bag.

Small luxury. Surprisingly useful.

Parent Beach Day FAQs

What do you really need for a family beach day?

Start with the basics: shade, comfortable seating, sunscreen, plenty of water, food, towels, and something to carry everything. Once those needs are covered, add the things that make the day more enjoyable for your particular family.

Is a beach wagon worth it?

If you’re regularly carrying gear for several people, it can be. A wagon is especially helpful when you have young children and need to transport a cooler, chairs, shade, towels, and toys. Look for wide wheels designed for sand.

What type of cooler is best for the beach?

The best cooler is one you can comfortably transport. A backpack cooler works particularly well for walking to the beach because it keeps your hands free. Larger families or all-day outings may benefit from a rolling or hard-sided cooler.

How do I keep sand out of everything?

You probably won’t.

But mesh bags, quick-dry towels, wet bags, and shaking everything out before leaving the beach can dramatically reduce how much sand ends up in the car.

How can parents actually relax at the beach?

Start by making everyone responsible for some of their own gear when they’re old enough. Establish one family home base, keep food and drinks accessible, and don’t overpack activities.

Then sit down.

The lake is the activity.
