The practical gear that keeps pets comfortable, contained and cared for when they join the family road trip.

Bringing a pet along changes the road-trip packing list. Suddenly, you’re thinking about water bowls, leashes, food and where exactly the dog is going to sleep when you reach the hotel.

A little organization before you leave makes the trip considerably easier. Pack your pet’s essentials together, keep the things you’ll need during stops accessible and bring enough familiar gear to make unfamiliar places feel a little more like home.

Pack a Pet Travel Bag

Give your pet a dedicated tote or backpack rather than scattering supplies throughout the car. Pack food, treats, medications, waste bags, grooming supplies and an extra leash.

Bring more food than you expect to need, particularly for longer trips. Changing brands halfway through vacation because the local store doesn’t carry yours is an inconvenience you can avoid.

Handle Food and Water on the Road

Pack your pet’s regular food in an airtight container or individual portions. Collapsible bowls take up very little room and are easy to pull out at rest stops.

Keep fresh water accessible, too. A pet travel water bottle can be particularly convenient for quick stops when you don’t want to unpack a bowl.

Make the Car Safe and Comfortable

Pets shouldn’t have free rein of the vehicle while you’re driving. Choose an appropriate travel crate, carrier or vehicle restraint designed for your pet and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Add a washable seat cover or cargo liner to protect the car from muddy paws, fur and the inevitable post-adventure mess.

For comfort, bring something familiar from home. A favorite blanket, bed or toy can help your pet settle into the car and later into a hotel or rental.

Be Ready for Stops

Keep a leash, waste bags and water somewhere you can reach without unloading the trunk.

A long line can be useful once you reach an appropriate outdoor space, while a quick-dry towel earns its place in the car after beaches, trails, rainstorms and muddy roadside breaks.

Prepare for the Unexpected

Before leaving, make sure your pet’s identification information is current. Bring copies of important vaccination or veterinary information when appropriate, particularly for longer trips or destinations that may require documentation.

A small pet first-aid kit is also worth keeping with your road-trip supplies.

And plan your route with your pet in mind. Regular breaks aren’t wasted travel time. They’re part of making the trip comfortable for everyone riding along.
