A Restaurant Built Into Ludington’s History
Long before craft beer became popular, the building housing Jamesport Brewing was already part of Ludington’s story.
The James Street complex dates back to 1890, when local builder and architect August Tiedemann constructed the original building for Swedish brothers Andrew (“Red”) and Axel Johnson. The property originally housed the Johnson Brothers Saloon and the Central House Hotel, serving sailors during Western Michigan’s booming logging era.
Over the next century, the building evolved with Ludington itself. It has been home to everything from a barber shop and hardware store to a theater, bicycle shop, furniture store, and even the local headquarters for the National Maritime Union.
One of the building’s most fascinating stories is also one of its most heartbreaking.
After Axel Johnson’s wife died while giving birth to their seventh child, her sister Ida traveled from Sweden to help raise the family’s ten children. She later returned home to gather her belongings before sailing back to Ludington aboard the RMS Titanic. Ida never arrived. She was among the more than 1,500 passengers who lost their lives when the ship sank in April 1912.
Today, guests can enjoy lunch or dinner while surrounded by over 130 years of local history.

The Atmosphere: Relaxed, Scenic, and Surprisingly Family Friendly
During our recent family vacation to Ludington, Jamesport quickly became one of our favorite meals of the trip.
We chose to sit on the outdoor deck overlooking the harbor. A local musician played acoustic guitar while friends lingered over dinner and couples sampled flights of beer.
Below us, families gathered in the Portside Garden where children played giant yard games while parents relaxed at picnic tables. One friendly dog happily lounged beneath its owners’ table, soaking up the summer evening.

The Portside Garden Beer Garden
One of Jamesport Brewing’s biggest surprises is the Portside Garden, an outdoor beer garden overlooking the harbor.
During the summer months you’ll find:
- Lawn games including cornhole, ladder ball, and giant Jenga
- Live music on Thursday evenings
- Outdoor bar service
- Casual picnic seating
- Views of the historic S.S. Badger entering and leaving Ludington Harbor
- A dog-friendly atmosphere (yes—your pup is welcome!)
If there’s a wait for a table inside, the garden is an ideal place to grab a drink and an appetizer while the kids burn off some energy.

What to Order at Jamesport Brewing
Jamesport’s menu has enough variety to satisfy everyone in the family.
We started with the cheese curds, and our boys made them disappear almost immediately. The spicy cheddar curds were our favorite and paired perfectly with the house dipping sauces.
For our entrées, we ordered:
- Grilled salmon
- Cajun chicken sandwich
- Burgers for the boys
Everything arrived hot, generously portioned, and exactly what we wanted after spending the day exploring Ludington.
If you’re visiting with kids, you’ll also find plenty of familiar options including mac and cheese, grilled cheese, hamburgers, chicken tenders, quesadillas, and fish and chips.

Sample the Local Beer
Of course, no visit would be complete without trying Jamesport’s handcrafted beer.
My husband and I ordered a flight so we could sample several brews.
Our favorites included:
- Blueberry Wheat — Their signature beer and easily the favorite. It’s light, refreshing, and finishes with just enough blueberry without tasting overly sweet.
- Apricot Wheat — Fruity, crisp, and perfect on a warm summer afternoon.
- Midwest IPA — Balanced with bright citrus hop flavor.
- Scottish Strong — Rich, malty, and noticeably more robust for darker beer fans.
Whether you prefer lagers, wheats, stouts, Belgian styles, or IPAs, there’s something for nearly every beer lover.

Go Behind the Scenes
One unexpected highlight of our visit was taking a quick brewery tour.
Mike and I had the opportunity to meet one of Jamesport’s brewers, who has worked there for 20 years.
That longevity says a great deal.
While many seasonal tourist destinations rely on constantly changing staff, Jamesport keeps many of its employees year-round, creating consistency that shows in both the service and the quality of the food and beer.
Meeting someone who has helped brew beer there for two decades added another layer to the experience and reminded us that Jamesport isn’t just a successful brewery—it’s a true part of the Ludington community.

Is Jamesport Brewing Worth Visiting?
Jamesport Brewing also gives back to Ludington.
Through its monthly Round Up program, customers can round up their checks, and Jamesport matches every penny donated before giving the funds to a different local nonprofit each month. It’s one more example of how the brewery continues investing in the community it has called home for decades.
